LEADING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN A VARIETY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCE FIELDS

The research carried out by IAE's teacher-researchers, recognized both nationally and internationally, is carried out in five disciplinary and cross-disciplinary areas that form the CERGAM research center:

  • Entrepreneurship, information and internationalization
  • Finance, Accounting and Control
  • Public management
  • Marketing and service management
  • Strategy and human resources management

Some of these areas are headed by IAE research professors, as is CERGAM itself (Pr. Nathalie Richebé).

  • Finance: Margit Munzer
  • Marketing and service management: Aurélie Hemonnet and Fanny Magnoni
  • Human resources strategy and management: Olivier Roques and Emmanuelle Reynaud

Within this framework, the IAE's teacher-researchers, individually or in teams, are involved in innovative research projects with an impact on business and society. In fact, this is the general principle that drives research at IAE: the aim is clearly to produce actionable knowledge that can be disseminated in its ecosystem and among its students.

IAE's teacher-researchers are also heavily involved in research training for students. The IAE has always placed the training of doctoral students at the heart of its strategic choices, and it stands out in the French academic landscape as one of France's leading centers for the training of doctoral students in management science.

The IAE Aix-Marseille was the first IAE to be set up in France in 1955, and was a pioneer in the development of management research and doctoral students in management science. It has trained, and continues to train, professors-researchers who teach at the most prestigious universities and business schools in France and abroad. Each year, the IAE Aix-Marseille supervises 50 doctoral theses. 70% of doctoral students are international.

The recent results of various audits of IAE and CERGAM research (HCERES and EQUIS re-accreditation of IAE Aix-Marseille in 2018) attest to this French and international recognition.

The faculty at IAE Aix-Marseille reflects the variety of profiles and skills that are brought together and mobilized to deliver the very best in management education to our institute's initial and continuing training students. The IAE brings together 40 professors and lecturers from CERGAM (one of France's leading management science research centers), 240 external lecturers/experts and professionals working in companies and public organizations in France, and 50 visiting professors from foreign partner universities and international professional lecturers. International guest speakers include Nobel Prize-winning economist William Sharpe, Henry Mintzberg, Denise Rousseau, William Starbuck and Andrew Pettigrew.

The IAE's teaching and research staff have a wide range of expertise in the fields of training and research. All the major management science disciplines are represented at the IAE, alongside more specialized and cross-disciplinary themes (sustainable development, leadership, international entrepreneurship, service management and luxury marketing) that reflect the institute's strategic choices and areas of research excellence (often supported by chairs).

  • The Entrepreneurial Legitimacy Chair (CLE)

In recent years, the craze for business creation has profoundly transformed society. In an environment that is difficult to predict, entrepreneurs, support structures, investors and public bodies are faced with numerous challenges: finding their bearings in a complex ecosystem, choosing the right partners, understanding institutional and financial games, making rapid operational and strategic decisions without neglecting factors crucial to the future of their company, and rapidly seizing new opportunities....
The Entrepreneurial Legitimacy Chair (CLE) was formed by two teacher-researchers (Bénédicte Aldebert and Antonin Ricard) and an entrepreneur (Jean-Baptiste Jaussaud) in response to these challenges. This research chair believes that entrepreneurial legitimacy is the key to meeting these challenges.
In concrete terms, Aix-Marseille Université's CLE is part of the research activities carried out by the CERGAM (Centre d'Études et de Recherches en Gestion d'Aix-Marseille) around 3 activities:

    • The creation of an observatory that regularly monitors the successes and failures of companies around the world; centralizes the latest scientific findings and knowledge on entrepreneurship, innovation, internationalization and company growth; and popularizes the latest research articles.
    • Holding workshops to disseminate recent research findings; participating in focus groups, experiments and analysis work; and taking part in specific research contracts.
    • The organization of events such as the Université d'Été sur la Légitimité Entrepreneuriale (UELE), which attracts the world's leading entrepreneurship researchers and provides a forum for exchange with the socio-economic world.

CERGAM - Centre d'Études et de Recherche en Gestion d'Aix-Marseille (Aix-Marseille Management Studies and Research Center) is a host team (EA 4225) and one of France's leading management science research centers, bringing together nearly 150 teaching and research staff and doctoral students from the Universities of Aix-Marseille and Toulon. The unit is one of the main centers for the production of doctoral theses in management science in France, and one of the oldest French management research centers, founded in 1974.

CERGAM's mission is to promote research in management science. This research is embodied in doctoral theses (over 400 defended), publications and national and international scientific events. CERGAM provides its members with scientific and material support. CERGAM's doctoral students in management sciences are enrolled in doctoral schools 372 at Aix-Marseille Université and 509 at Université de Toulon. CERGAM is a member of two Aix-Marseille University institutes and two research federations.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES CONTRIBUTING TO THE IAE'S INFLUENCE

The IAE and its teacher-researchers are regularly involved in the organization of scientific conferences in management science.

  • La Londe Conference

For several years now, the IAE has been organizing an international conference on marketing and service management in June. This event ("Marketing Communications and Consumer Behavior Conference") alternates between two major areas of management:

    • Consumer Behavior and Marketing (held since 1974)
    • Service Management (held since 1990)

The La Londe Marketing Communications and Consumer Behavior Conference is the most prestigious European conference in the field of consumer behavior, along with the European Association for Consumer Research. Every two years, it brings together academics from all over the world, and has welcomed world-renowned guest speakers with eminent scientific responsibilities, such as editor-in-chief of leading academic journals (Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Psychology) or president of scientific associations such as the Association for Consumer Research. Among these teachers-researchers are Chris A. Janiszewski, Margaret C. Campbell, Dan Ariely, John G. Lynch, Norbert Schwarz and Robert Peterson.

  • UELE

The Université d'Été sur la Légitimité Entrepreneuriale (UELE) aims to bring together researchers and players from the socio-economic world around the theme of legitimacy. Organized jointly by the Organisational Legitimacy Association (OLA) and the Chaire Légitimité entrepreneuriale (CLE), the third edition took place on July 12 and 13, 2023 in Marseille.

The Université d'Eté presents the latest research on legitimacy in the field of entrepreneurship. These are carried out by national and international researchers.

This academic work forms the basis for discussions with decision-makers from the socio-economic world.

Exchanges between CEOs, entrepreneurs, investors, managers, public decision-makers, directors of support structures and researchers aim to advance the understanding and practical application of the concept of legitimacy. Topics covered include: multi-level analysis of legitimacy, the legitimization process, acquiring legitimacy through a professional network or support structure, legitimacy as a strategic or critical resource, legitimacy and start-ups' social networks, legitimacy and internationalization.
