Master's of Research in General Management
"The "à la carte" formula of the Master of Science in Management Research at the IAE Aix enables you to select your own school career and specialise in the research domain that really interests you.
At the IAE Aix, we accompany our students through their careers as young researchers and help them become professors of management and/or high-level consultants."
Elyette Roux, Faculty Advisor
Objective
After admitting you to our Master's of Science in Management Research, our aim is to prepare you for a rewarding career in the domains of Research and Consulting.
Created in 1952 as the first DEA in Management in France, our research programme has markedly contributed to the population of Professors and Researchers in management in France and abroad. Our DEA and Doctoral alumni teach in Universities and prestigious institutions of higher education ("Grandes Ecoles") in France and abroad: the USA, Canada, Japan, China, South Africa, Germany, etc
Admission Requirements
Direct admission into the 2nd year of the Master's of Science in Management Research requires a diploma with the equivalent of 4 years of studies after the high school diploma. Most of the students come from classic programmes in Economics and Management (Universities and "Grandes Ecoles"). The Master's of Science in Management Research is open to students from different disciplines and encourages their applications (engineering school, sociology, mathematics, philosophy, …).
Applicants should fill in an application and send the results of their last diploma. They must also take a management aptitude test (Tage-Mage [organised by the FNEGE] for French-speaking applicants or the GMAT for foreign applicants). Finally, an individual interview will enable applicants to express their choices and motivations.
Mastery of French (for the foreign students) and English is indispensable. TOEFL/TOEIC scores will also be required.
Organisation of Studies
The Master's of Science in Management Research offers a great variety of courses and enables students to specialise in the following domains: Human Resources Management, Public Management (in collaboration with the Institute of Political Science and Territorial Management [IMPGT]), Marketing, Strategy and Sustainable Development.
Students attend two types of courses:
- Courses from the common-core syllabus which make up the methodological base of the studies and research in Management Sciences.
- Courses in their specialty in the framework of each option. Each is composed of a range of four research workshops. Students must attend at least two other courses in another speciality of the Master's in Research, or from the catalogue of programmes at the University Doctoral School.
The Master's of Science in Management Research is administered from September to September. The first trimester is devoted to the common-core syllabus and the following two trimesters to the specialty courses and the thesis. There is an oral exam at the end of June and the thesis must be defended in the first week of September.
Structure and Content of the Programme
Commun-core syllabus: Methodological Seminars (Semester 3)
Specialised seminars: at least 4 courses in the “major” option and 2 in the “minor” option (semester 4)
Human Resources Management
Marketing
Strategy and Sustainable Development
Public Management (in collaboration with the Institute of Political Science and Territorial Management (IMPGT) of Aix-en-Provence)
Research paper
The aim of this work leading to the writing of a paper is to place the student in the position of a researcher and to accomplish, under the direction of a faculty advisor, the stages of research leading to publication in a journal.
The student should therefore formulate a subject, a research plan, perform a review of the literature, propose a theoretic framework with the main issue, choose a method, select the data or carry out the observations and analyses of the gathered data.
Oral Exam
The Oral Exam enables the school to evaluate the extent of knowledge and the capacity of the student to present a subject in his or her field in a synthetic and pedagogic manner. We therefore propose a research subject that is quite general for oral presentation to a panel of two professors.
Evaluation
The system of evaluation does not favour reproduction, but rather comprehension of the phenomena and foundations of management.
At the end of the programme, the student must:
- Master the fundamental methods of management research, qualitative and quantitative,
- Know the latest advances in his or her domain (HRM, Public Management, Marketing, Strategy and Information Systems, Finance and management control).
- Have performed rigorous research work in his or her domain within the framework of his or her thesis.
Be capable, during the oral exam, of constructing and developing a high-level presentation on a research theme in management.
Profile of Positions Accessible for Future Graduates
Up to the present, approximately half of the Master's Research programme students have enrolled in doctoral dissertation in order to become a university or "Grande Ecole" professor-researcher.
The team of professors of the Master's Research programme, accredited to direct research, will help you to put together your dissertation project, choose your future dissertation advisor and follow your doctoral research at the CEROG (Centre of Studies and Research on Organisations and Management of the IAE Aix).
Every year, several of our students obtain, on merit, regional scholarships, research subsidies, or CIFRE contracts (dissertations in firms) in order to finance their three years of dissertation.
The other half of the students joins a very large network of Management Sciences Master's alumni for a career in consulting (marketing, HR, strategy) executive management.
