Any other visas (e.g. tourist short stay visa ) do not allow foreigners to stay in France for more than 3 months.

Cars

Renting a car:

There are several major car rental companies in Aix-en-Provence or on your arrival at Marseille/Provence Airport or TGV-AIX railway station. The “Yellow Pages (Pages Jaunes) will give you names and addresses. http://www.pagesjaunes.fr

Buying a car:

Some students decide to buy a car during their stay in Aix-en-Provence.
Because new automobiles are expensive, students often choose to buy used cars. It is important to choose a car that you will be able to sell easily when leaving.

Where to find a car:

Some exchange students in the past have bought cars from other exchange students who were leaving. You can take a look at the bulletin board of the IAE Aix.You can also search the classified ads for car listings in local newspapers or free newspapers like “Aix Hebdo”, “Le Choc”, “Aix Sept”.

Automobile Insurance:

Auto insurance is required for all drivers. You will have to inquire with insurance companies to get adequate coverage. Auto insurance companies are listed in the “Pages Jaunes” phone book. It is wise to compare prices and the extent of coverage with at least two insurance agents before purchasing insurance.

If you decide to buy a car:

You must be aware of the French Laws for driving in France. Failure to do so can result in traffic tickets or accidents. Some of the most commonly violated rules are those that deal with speed limits and parking violations.
When driving, you must be in possession of a valid Driver Licence, adequate car insurance, the car registration certificate (carte grise) which proves you own the car, and if parking on campus, an IAE Aix parking decal.

Adjusting to a new culture

When people move into a different setting, they must make certain adjustments or adaptations to their usual behaviour and attitudes. Because of this, some students experience what is commonly called “culture shock” once they arrive.
Culture shock is the term given to the feeling of disorientation and confusion that often occurs when a person moves from a familiar setting into an unfamiliar one. The climate and terrain, the language, customs, food and culture are different. It is harder to convey your feelings and personality in a language that is different from your native one. You may feel lonely and may doubt your decision to come here. Some symptoms of culture shock include : homesickness, avoidance of social settings, depression or sleep disturbance.
It is normal to experience some signs of culture shock. We at the IAE Aix hope you will adjust to life in Aix-en-Provence and enjoy your experience as an exchange student.

Interacting with the French:

When introduced, a smile, a firm handshake and a distinct: ”Monsieur”, “Madame” generally does the trick. French people shake hands more readily and more often than do the British or North Americans! Be prepared, and do not be fooled by the daily kiss on both cheeks (la bise), generally exchanged between friends, relatives, colleagues whom you can stand, old acquaintances of either sex, and children).

A special note to women
Some women students may have a hard time adjusting to attitudes they encounter abroad, in both public and private interactions between men and women, and have to learn how to deal with unwanted attentions. This challenge is part of understanding another culture.

Tipping Tipping (15%°) is always included in the bill. An extra gratuity can be given for very good service. No tip is given in cafeterias or fast food restaurants.
