Virtual learning: how does it work?

Virtual Learning combined with internet technology allows managers from various cultural, national and sectorial backgrounds to work together, without having to cross borders. Moreover, on-line courses also allow flexibility in when and where to study. As no lectures are required, participants can study when they want, making it easier to plan study and work schedules alike.

Furthermore, case discussions tend to go deeper in a virtual environment as they last for several days or even weeks. As such you have enough time to deeply reflect on the content and your answer. We also notice that a virtual environment enables a more equal contribution of the team members, as qualities such as being extravert or introvert do not interfere to the same extent in virtual discussions as they do in face-to-face team discussions.

Multicural team work

You study in groups of 4 to 6 students, with at least 3 nationalities present during two courses in a row. Thus, peer group pressure enforces the discipline needed to complete the courses.
Furthermore, you learn to work in multicultural teams at a distance; one of the most important competences of the actual international manager. Most important however is that participants feel very motivated and inspired by the team support and the intellectual challenge it presents.

Materials and IT Support

Materials such as books, readers and/or a CD-ROM are provided to students at the residential weeks, where they also get an introductory lecture on the course and a kick off session with their course team.
However, in order to know in detail what to do with the materials, students need to consult the course database, which can be accessed either via Lotus Notes or via the Web. In the course database, students will find information about the objectives of the course, what is expected of them and up to date reading materials.
Furthermore, in the virtual learning environment, you can discuss with your fellow participants, work on team assignments and communicate with your tutor.

Assessment

Typically, the assessment for each course will be an individual assignment, a group assignment and a final exam. Furthermore, all three assignments are case oriented or linked to the organisation of student, thus focusing students on real life situations.

Examination

The traditional examination system of a single final written exam is often a poor method of evaluation, particularly for people writing in a language which is not their own. Therefore, we emphasize casework as it allows students time to research and prepare their answers to problems, as they would do in their respective companies. Furthermore, casework allows participants to build up a broad and varied business knowledge, which goes beyond the boundaries of their own sector.
